Both Mai and Marvell are planing to produce 3rd party PPC970 chipsets
(Articia I, Articia IS and one of the Marvell Discovery III chipsets)
IBM will also provide a chipset known only as CPC925 IIRC. Apple DO NOT
use IBM chpisets, they develop thier own. So G5 systems wouldn't
necasserily be that expensive or Apple clones. The economies of scale
problem that plauges PowerPC and other RISC chips will probably be with
us for a while but it's getting better, especialy as the G5 is now in
the XBos, that should push processor cost down. A non-Apple comapny
could probably make G5 system's to compete w/Athlon FX and Pentium 4 EE
systems on price and perforamance. The 750 aka G3 series have issues
when used in SMP mode. They require a large software overhead to make up
for features missing on the chips. They also lag way behind the G5 in
clock speeds witha Max of 1.1Ghz on the 750GX.
